Why Client-Side Image Processing Matters

The problem with uploading your images

Every time you use an online image tool, you’re trusting a third party with your files. Your vacation photos, screenshots with sensitive information, personal documents — they all get sent to someone else’s server. Even if the service promises to delete your files, you have no way to verify that.

Beyond privacy, there are practical downsides too:

  • Upload and download time — Large images take time to transfer, especially on slow connections
  • File size limits — Most free tools cap uploads at 5-10MB
  • Account requirements — Many tools force you to sign up before processing
  • Rate limiting — Free tiers often restrict how many images you can process

The browser can do it all

Modern browsers ship with powerful image processing capabilities built right in. The HTML5 Canvas API can:

  • Read image data pixel by pixel
  • Resize images with high-quality interpolation
  • Re-encode images in JPEG, PNG, and WebP formats
  • Control compression quality with fine granularity

All of this happens in milliseconds, using your device’s CPU. No network round-trip, no server processing queue, no waiting.

How Reshrimp uses client-side processing

When you drop an image into Reshrimp, here’s what happens:

  1. File reading — The browser reads the file from your disk into memory using the File API
  2. Image decoding — An Image element decodes the raw file into pixel data
  3. Canvas processing — The pixel data is drawn to an off-screen Canvas at the target dimensions
  4. Re-encoding — The Canvas exports the result as a Blob in the chosen format and quality
  5. Download — The Blob is offered as a download, going directly from memory to your disk

At no point does any data leave your browser. There are no network requests, no temporary files on a server, and no analytics tracking what you’re processing.

When client-side processing makes sense

Client-side processing is ideal for:

  • Privacy-sensitive images — Medical records, identity documents, personal photos
  • Quick edits — Resizing a screenshot for social media shouldn’t require an account
  • Offline scenarios — Processing images on a plane or in areas with poor connectivity
  • Batch workflows — No upload/download bottleneck means faster iteration

For heavy-duty processing like AI upscaling or complex filters, server-side tools still have their place. But for the everyday tasks of resizing, converting, and compressing — your browser is more than enough.
